Filming Locations in Dubrovnik
Places like King’s Landing Gates, Littlefingers Brothel, Spice King of Qarth Palace and…
The Red Keep
The Red Keep is a castle made of pale red stone that overlooks the Blackwater Bay on Aegon’s Hill in King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. It contains the Great Hall, a massive throne room where the Iron Throne is situated and is the home of the King or Queen. Dubrovnik’s monumental fortress St. Lawrence (Lovrijenac) was used a set for filming multiple scenes depicting quarters and exterior of the Red Keep including the Purple Wedding, tourney on King Joffrey’s name day etc.
Docks Of Blackwater Bay
The path leading under Pile Gate drawbridge gets you to the docks of King’s Landing. Visit the beach where the royal entourage including King Joffrey, Queen Cersei Lannister, Tyrion and Sansa Stark are at the docks seeing off Princess Myrcella to Dorne, where the Gold Cloaks were ordered to kill all of King Robert Baratheon’s bastards or where Tyrion goes to the city walls (Fort Bokar) with Lord Varys to discuss strategy to win the battle of Blackwater Bay.
King’s Landing Pier
On the way to the steep staircase to the Red Keep, we stop at one of the piers of Dubrovnik western bay of Kolorina. This location doubles for some of the Blackwater Bay and the wildfire scenes in the show. Also, it was used for shots of Sansa and Shae when they were talking on the pier about ships and places ahead before Petyr Baelish (Littlefinger) shows up to tell Sansa on how he’s planning to get her out of King’s Landing and back to her family.
Streets of King’s Landing
Our tours take you through the streets of King’s Landing where Rebellion versus Joffrey took place after he ordered his personal guard to execute the entire crowd. Find the location of scenes following the events of the Purple wedding, with Sansa fleeing to a ship off the coast, Jamie’s return to King’s Landing after his imprisonment, scenes of Littlefinger’s brothel and place where Tyrion speaks with Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne who came to seek revenge.
Walk Of Shame
The infamous Walk Of Shame is the highlight of every Game of Thrones walking tour. In Westeros, it is a public ritual of punishment and penance in the Faith of the Seven. A confessed sinner walks a certain distance stripped of all clothing, exposed to the eyes and mockery of the population. After a time imprisoned, Queen Cersei confesses to having committed adultery. As she walks naked, she is accompanied by a Septa, repeatedly crying out “Shame!” and ringing a bell to attract people’s attention.
The Great Sept of Baelor
The Great Sept of Baelor, named after the Septon-king Baelor the Blessed, is the large building in the center of King’s Landing, a place of religious worship for the Faith of the Seven and the seat of the High Septon. The filming of Sept Baelor scenes took place on Jesuit Stairs that descend from St. Ignatius Church. Shots at the location include the Tywin Lannister funeral, scenes revolving around the High Sparrow and the Faith Militant, Walk of Shame scenes, the destruction of Sept Baelor etc.
House of the Undying
Khaleesi was in Dubrovnik as well. The House of the Undying is the headquarters for the most powerful amongst the warlocks of Qarth. Scenes like the episode when Dragon Queen Daenerys Targaryen and Ser Jorah Mormont walk around trying to find the entrance into the House of Undying looking for her stolen dragons were filmed in various places around Dubrovnik such as Old Town walls, Minceta Fortress, and Bokar Fortresses, as well as on the green Lokrum island.
TALES FROM THE SEVEN KINGDOMS
Did you know that Croatia is one of the most relevant film locations for HBO’s epic TV series Game of Thrones?
HBO considered a myriad of countries and cities best to represent King’s Landing, the capital of Seven Kingdoms until finally deciding on Dubrovnik. Its historical architecture with awe-inspiring fortresses and walls, Mediterranean landscapes and climate is the closest it gets to the image of King’s Landing that George R. R. Martin envisioned when writing A Song of Ice and Fire series of epic fantasy novels.
Our tours will take you through various parts of Old Town where some of the most significant scenes from the beloved Game of Thrones TV show were filmed. Locations like King’s Landing Gate where King Joffrey faced a bloodthirsty mob, menacing Red Keep, the Battle of Blackwater Bay, the shocking Purple Wedding and Walk of Shame scene location among many others.
All filming sites, including the latest 8th season, are accompanied with commentary from a local guide with detailed scene descriptions and actual pictures of the individual episodes it featured on. Throughout the tour, you can also learn fascinating stories of Dubrovnik history and facts about the most important buildings of the venerable Republic of Ragusa. You may even hear gossip from behind the scenes about sets and actors as some of our guides were Game of Thrones extras and members of the production crew. Better than any Self Tour. Have a blast reminiscing about the show and take home some really unique memories with you! If you have watched the series and you are passionate about GOT this is a perfect thing to do while visiting Dubrovnik.
Reviews
Had an absolutely fabulous tour. Guide very knowledgeable with interesting quips, kept the tour enjoyable and entertaining. Would go again and would recommend. Quite hot as we went in early July but our guide kept us in the shade as much as possible. Loved it (I am the GoT fan my wife not so much) but she really enjoyed it and did the walk of shame steps to send back to her friends.
This tour was excellent! Our guide skillfully led us through Dubrovnik, showed us the amazing sites used for Game of Thrones, and shared insider stories about the actors. (Lots of great photo ops!) He also gave us important highlights of Dubrovnik’s history, including the war. Our guide was charming and smart and happy to answer our many questions. We would highly recommended this tour!
Loved this tour! It was SO fun seeing all the places GOT was filmed and nerding out over all the locations (plus it’s gorgeous anyway). Plus our tour guide has been a body double/PA for the last 5 seasons so it was great to get the inside scoop (no spoilers though). Highly recommend if you’re a fan of the show.
